Bronchial alveolar lavage fluid from a 23-year-old worker engaged in the manufacture of insulation products was found to have asbestos fibers surrounded by clear, crystalline particles using mineral microscopy, ie, polarization microscopy, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed that the main component of this crystalline particle is calcium oxalate. This particle was first discovered and described by Bal. The authors argue that the appearance of this “oxalate” in human lung tissue, in addition to the classic asbestos body, may be another type of response of human lungs to inhaled asbestos fibers.
