The multi-path effect should be considered in estimating the maritime radar’s ranging performance. This effect is particularly significant for ships and grazing sea targets, as the sea surface has a larger reflection coefficient when the radar illuminates the sea surface with a smaller angle of incidence. Therefore, the radar detection range depends not only on “normal” output parameters such as output power, antenna gain, and receiver noise figure, and radar parameters, but also on antenna and target altitude, wavelength, and atmosphere. This paper presents a method in which the radar parameters are represented by the free-space detection distance, R_0, which is the radar detection distance without multipath effects, and the influence of the geometric relationship and multipath effects is ultimately attributed to the “radar-line-of-sight” R_ (HRZ). The results given are easy to graph and can be compared and evaluated for different radar scenarios. It is thought that the accuracy of the pictorial method is comparable to our limited understanding of certain parameters, such as the radar cross-sectional area of a ship and its distribution with altitude.
