北大、清华是中国学术和文化的象征。她们一直被誉为中国的最高学府,在亚洲大学中也名列前茅。深厚的文化沉淀、严谨的学术传统,造就了中国最优秀的学者大师。学者们渊博的学识,杰出的才智,无私无畏的独立思想,形成了独具一格的精神魅力。他们的个人品质与风范让人高山仰止,在世俗中总能坚守灵魂的阵地。可以说,两校一直是一代又一代学子衷心向往的圣地。因此,主宰这样最高学府的校长绝不能是平常之辈。远一点来看,两校历届校长都是著名的学者,他们不仅是校长,而且是某一时期知识界的代表人物,在他们身上集中地反映了当时思想潮流和社会趋势。他们即是中华民族的脊梁,又是中华文明的继承者和发扬光大者。比如,北大的孙家鼐与百日维新,严复与《天演论》,蔡元培的美学思想和教育思想,胡适的主张白话文,马寅初的《新人口论》,几乎囊括了每一次中国自由和民主的发展。清华校长、我国杰出的现代教育家梅贻琦先生,早在1931年就说:“所谓大学者,非谓有大楼之谓也,有大师之谓也。”
Peking University, Tsinghua University is a symbol of Chinese academic and cultural. They have always been hailed as China’s highest institution, also among the best in Asian universities. Deep cultural precipitation, rigorous academic traditions, created China’s best scholar master. Therefore, the principal who rules such a highest institution must not be an ordinary one. A little further, the principals of the two universities are all well-known scholars. They are not only the principal, but also the representatives of the intellectual circles in a certain period, in which they collectively reflect the current ideological trends and social trends. They are the backbone of the Chinese nation, they are also the successors to and carry forward the Chinese civilization. For example, Sun Jia-鼐 and Hundred Days Reform, Yan Fu and “Evolution and Ethics” at Peking University, Cai Yuanpei’s aesthetic and educational thoughts, Hu Shih’s vernacular and Ma Yinchu’s “New Population Theory” almost cover every time China’s freedom and democratic development . Tsinghua President, Mei Yiqi, an outstanding modern educator in our country, said as early as 1931: “The so-called college students, non-essential building, also have the masters.”
