自主学习,在上世纪70年代美国等发达国家就明确提出来了,原因有两个:一是人本主义心理学的影响;强调学习者要为他们自己的学习负责,比如自我决策、自我选择并实施学习活动、表露自己的能力、需要和偏爱等;在这种学习模式中,教师的作用不再只是知识的传播者,而是学生学习的指导者和顾问.二是学科教育研究对象和方法的转变;传统的教育研究侧重研究教育者、教育方法、教育内容以及教育目标,而忽视对受教育者本身的研究,于是以学习者本体为中心的教育研究迅速发展起来.
