岩体的力学作用和力学性质明显地受岩体结构、岩性及岩体赋存条件,特别是地应力控制着。因此,根据岩体结构、岩性及地应力对岩体中应力传播、岩体变形及破坏所具有的力学效应特点,可将岩体分为块裂介质、碎裂介质及连续介质等三种力学介质。岩体力学是由块裂介质岩体力学、碎裂介质岩体力学及连续介质岩体力学共同组成的力学体系。
