据日本模具工业会调查,1957年模具生产额为106亿日元。1967年据工业统计为662亿日元。1976年为3,267亿日元,1977年为4,064亿日元。即以10年6倍,20年38倍的增长速度迅速发展。见(图1)日本模具的生产形式非常复杂,据1976年工业统计,从事模具生产厂家有7,409个,其中6,946家人数不到20人,比率为93.7%,100人以上的厂家仅占总数的0.4%。基本上都是小型厂家。不仅是日本,美国与欧洲也是如此。见表1。按其生产形式模具生产厂家大致区分为两种:(1)自用(厂内自制):生产的模具主要供本厂使用。
