河南腊梅有着悠久的栽培历史,品种也很多,尤以鄢陵腊梅品质最佳。最近几年,河南农业大学赵天榜副教授与陈志秀等同志,经过三年的调查研究,终于初步查清,河南南腊梅有三个品种群22个品种,其中还发掘出早已失传的珍品——腊素金莲花腊梅,并还选出晚花腊梅、小花圆被腊梅等新品种。在林业部等业务部门的支持下,最近在腊梅之乡鄢陵正筹建腊梅基因库,为培育腊梅新品种奠定基础。
