鸡西市位于黑龙江省东南部,穆棱河上游段,是以煤炭工业为主导产业的能源型城市,是我国重要的煤炭生产基地。乌苏里江一级支流穆棱河横贯市区,流经72公里,多年平均年径流量30立方米/秒。除此,区内还分布有牤牛河、滴道河、黄泥河及一些小支流,平时流量不大,主要接纳市区和沿岸工矿企业废水及生活污水,分别汇注入穆棱河。鸡西市行政区面积2 208.5平方公里,多年平均降水量537毫米,水资源总量为3.37亿立方米,地下水可开采量0.28亿立方米。
