Faced with intense sea competition in the 21st century, several large Western exploration companies have recently ordered new ships and updated equipment to gain a foothold in this new round of competition. Geco-Prakla ordered a new boat in Norway and is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 1999. The vessel is capable of laying 20 streamers with 50% more coverage than the widest available. The vessel is equipped with the company’s Trilogy acquisition and shipboard handling technology. With this new boat, it is possible to provide maritime 3-D seismic exploration services at very high efficiency and at very low cost. In 2000, Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) commissioned six high-productivity seismic vessels
