作为第一部被搬上英国舞台的中国戏剧,亚瑟?墨菲的《中国孤儿》诞生于英国民族身份的形成期。本文通过对该剧、相关的副文本以及其他历史文献的互文来解读揭示该剧体现出的民族话语、政治话语、性别话语与审美话语的互动,以及该剧作者对英国民族性中自由、民主、平等、理性等特质的构建。本文同时指出,墨菲在该剧中对英国民族性的构建深受当时欧洲的中国文化研究领域对作为“他者”的中国形象塑造的影响。
As the first Chinese drama to be brought onto the British stage, Arthur Murphy’s “Chinese Orphan” was born during the formation of British national identity. Through the intertextual reading of the play, the relevant sub-texts and other historical documents, this article reveals the interaction between national discourse, political discourse, gender discourse and aesthetic discourse reflected in the play, and the writer’s analysis of the freedom, Democracy, equality and rationality. This article also points out that Murphy’s construction of British nationality in the play is deeply influenced by the Chinese image of Europe as the “otherness” in the field of Chinese culture at the time.
