外语教学法在国外也称语言教学法。究其原因,在于外语教学法研究的根本问题是人类如何学会语言的。外语教学法与本族语教学法虽属两个范畴,却有血缘关系。尤其是在具体方法方面,两者互通领域更大。任何具体方法,一旦应用于外语教学,必会反映本族语文化的特点。同一具体方法应用于不同民族相同的目的语教学,也会反映本族语民族的文化差异。这种差异是吸附本族语习用方法的结果,属文化继承。所以具体方法也有继承性,继承性体现传统的真谛,
