In the airport, cleaning the surfaces of the wings and other critical parts of the aircraft is crucial for safe flight. To ensure that the surfaces of all critical locations are clean, an aircraft detection system must be used to reliably detect ice, fog, snow or spent deicing (anti-icing) fluids. In order for the system to work effectively, work must be carried out in many different winter climates. The system must be able to detect ice contamination in the presence of water and deicing / anti-icing fluid. The system must also be easy to deploy and have minimal impact on the airline’s operations. To date, only a few candidate technologies have met these challenging job and performance requirements.
