艺术表演要有一定的方法。包世臣所著《艺舟双楫》中云“艺之精者,必通乎道。”演员演戏,单纯靠艺术经验不行,还必须不断地总结这些经验,使之升华出理论,使演员的劳动成为科学的劳动,使演员的舞台行为成为一种有规律可循、有方法可掌握的活动,以便更好的认识我们的创造实际,指导我们的演戏实践,而不只是一种手工业式的摸索。戏曲做功八诀——“诚则灵”、“熟返生”、“明戏路”、“心气清”、“意久远”、“入化境”、“假中象”、“余味浓”,是许多前辈艺人,根据自己的舞台实践活动,总结出的表演艺术经验之一。我们把它加以概括地阐述,目的就是鉴于以上的初衷。
