苦地丁为罂粟科植物紫堇的干燥全草,主产于河北,山西、山东等地,野生,亦有栽培品,河北安国栽培的苦地丁已有较长的历史,主销北京、天津、河北、内蒙古、青海等地。紫堇为多年生草本,喜生荒地、田边、沟边潮湿处。以立夏前后半籽半花时采收为宜,采收带根全草,去净泥土,晒干即可。苦地丁皱缩成团,长10~30cm。主根圆锥形,表面棕黄色。茎细,多分枝,表面灰绿色或黄绿色,具5纵棱,质软,断面中空。叶多皱缩破碎,暗绿色或灰绿色,完整叶片二至三回羽状全裂。花少见,花冠唇形,有距,淡紫色。蒴果扁长椭圆形,呈荚果状。
