New Scientist recently published an article covering the discussions at an AAAS academic conference. The article pointed out that the basic character of humanity may not all be basic. Psychologists who study how culture affects human mind and emotions find that traditional scientific knowledge in science textbooks often applies only to Western societies. As Joan Miller, a professor of psychology at Yale University, points out, “In the past, the field tended to accept the argument that psychology is outside of culture, but for now we think some psychological phenomena are fundamentally affected Cultural influence. ”
