2005年10月北京市西城区荣获首批全国文明城区称号,以此为契机,西城区不断强化首都意识、首善意识、首创意识,全面实施“经济强区、文化兴区、环境优区”战略,在新的起点上持续推进文明城区建设。2008年,依据《全国文明城市(区)测评体系》,经过中央文明委严格复查,在首批全国文明城市和文明城区中,西城区取得公共文明指数第一、总成绩第二的好成绩,捍卫了荣誉,开创了文明城区建设工作新局面。
