异步传递模式ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode)被ITU—T定为B—ISDN最主要的目标传递模式.传递模式是指电信网中信息传输、复用和交换的方式.ATM利用光纤做为传输媒体,传输速率很高,误码率极低.ATM利用动态统计复用技术,不同的信息被打包成固定长度的53字节信元后进行复用.因而网络带宽的利用率高,网络的通用性好,能够容纳多种不同速率和不同格式的业务.ATM是面向连接的,它综合了分组交换网和电路交换网两者的优点.ATM最初是作为骨干网技术进行研究的,但由于某些标准化不够完善,产品价格过高,传输媒体有限等等技术原因,使ATM技术首先在局域网中得到应用.
