Plasma fibronectin is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 450,000 synthesized by fibroblasts, macrophages, vascular endothelial cells, and hepatocytes. Its most important function is to play a role as a regulator of the reticuloendothelial system. It binds to various types of waste, such as denatured collagen, and enhances the phagocytosis of macrophages. It has been shown that plasma fibronectin concentrations are seen to be decreased in patients after sepsis and trauma. The decrease in plasma fibronectin concentrations seems to be related to the persistence of circulating micro-aggregates, dead cells and filaments, as the reticuloendothelial system can not engulf them. It is thought that these foreign bodies are embedded
