1981年世界杯后，中国男排一直在低谷中徘徊，在亚洲却难同日本、韩国等队抗衡。1997年，中国男排在第9届亚洲男子排球锦标赛上夺得冠军，队员打出了水平，找回了自信，但中国男排在1998年，第14届世界排球锦标赛上，又被世界诸强挤出了前14名，这充分说明了，中国男排同世界强队间的差距是明显的，中国男排向世界排坛更高层次迈进，就要尽快解决好几个关键问题。
