陈寔[shí],字仲弓,颍川郡许县(今河南许昌)人。汉桓帝时,他曾在太丘任太丘长。他出身低微,很能体谅劳动人民的疾苦。他平时经常微服私访,了解民情。他为人正直,无论做什么事都严格要求自己,成为乡里人的表率和榜样,因此,人们都尊称他为“陈太丘”。当时年成不好,百姓的生活十分困难。有些人由于日子实在过不下去了,就铤而走险干起了偷鸡摸狗的勾当。有一天晚上,一个小偷钻进了陈寔的家,躲在房梁上,以便伺机行事。

One night, a thief got into Chen’s home and hid on the beams to help her wait for the job.
