Huge gastric ulcers (greater than or equal to 3 cm) have long been considered a critically ill condition that is prone to bleeding and perforation of peptic ulcers, which are refractory to medical therapy and very likely to recur even after healing. Therefore, most surgeons advocate early surgery. Much of this advice is based on previous surgical literature on the advent of H 2 receptor antagonists.
