纳撒尼尔·霍桑的代表作《红字》的主体具有多样性的特点,因此在主题研究领域存在着不同的看法。部分学者偏重于探讨小说中的原罪意识、霍桑的道德观念、宗教信仰和女性主义思想、个人与社会的关系以及大脑和心灵之间的冲突等因素,尤其赞赏女主人公在清教压迫下惊世骇俗的抗争精神和爱情追求,本文作者经研究认为,赫斯特的爱情追求有悖于教义信仰,不容于伦理道德,并深受婚姻家庭观念的影响,所以其爱情追求是非常有局限性的。
