New Zealand will establish a Department of Research and Science and Technology this year to oversee government-funded research and advise on policy development. A new Foundation for Research and Science and Technology, to be serviced and audited by the Department, will also be established. The foundation will fund research workers in ways that are totally different from those used to be funded by the current science and industry research institutes to government research institutes. The Bureau of Science and Industry will no longer provide policy advice. The foundation is likely to be the main source of funding: the government provides NZ $ 380 million a year in research funding.
