In May 1943, a senior Kuomintang officer who served as a counselor in the agent’s room was able to talk confidentially with Zhou Enlai in Chongqing through secret channels and expressed his desire for the Chinese Communist Party and his strong desire to join the party. He was the legendary general Han Liancheng, former deputy commander of the Lanzhou Military Region of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
