OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between ADMA and EH by comparing the differences of plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) levels in Kazak, Uyghur women with postmenopausal women with essential hypertension. Methods: A total of 71 women with EH in Kazaks during the postmenopausal period and 68 Uyghur women were enrolled in this study. Fifty-six healthy Kazak women of the postmenopausal group and 50 Uyghur women of the same condition were selected as control group. The levels of ADMA in plasma of two ethnic minority cases and control subjects were detected by RP-HPLC, and the biochemical indexes such as blood lipid, blood glucose and fructosamine were also detected. The correlation analysis was based on bivariate correlation analysis. Results: Compared with the control group, plasma ADMA levels in two ethnic groups were as follows: case group [Kazak: (0.37 ± 0.05) μg / ml; Uygur: (0.39 ± 0.08) μg / ml]; control group [Kazak 0.30 ± 0.02) μg / ml; Uygur (0.29 ± 0.11) μg / ml], the difference was statistically significant (P <0.01). The plasma ADMA level in the two ethnic groups was higher than that in the control group. Bivariate analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between plasma ADMA levels and blood pressure in postmenopausal women with hypertension (r = 0.672, P <0.01) and Uyghur (r = 0.732, P <0.01). Conclusion: The level of plasma ADMA is higher in postmenopausal women than in postmenopausal women. There is a positive correlation between ADMA level and blood pressure level. ADMA may be involved in the occurrence and development of EH.
