Propargyl optionally irreversibly inhibits monoamine oxidase B (MAOB) and does not cause “cheese-like effects” when administered with foods containing tyramine or levodopa. MAOB blockers inhibit the metabolism of dopamine, may reduce the production of free radicals, and increase brain dopamine levels. The UK Parkinson’s Disease Study Group (UKPDRG) randomized to co-administration of prophylactic and levodopa with levodopa in patients with Parkinson’s disease and found that the former mortality increased.
