The authors confirmed that the M gene of the acute measles virus Nagahata strain is closely related to the Biken strain from a sub-acute sclerosing full-brain disease (SSPE) -deficient virus. The Nagahata strain measles virus protein has similar antigen and electrophoretic properties as the Edmoston strain measles virus protein. Gene sequence analysis revealed that the nucleotide sequence of the M gene in Nagahata strain was significantly different from that of the acute measles virus studied to date. For example, there are 46 nucleotide differences with CAM-RB and HU-2, The surprisingly similar genes for the Sikel-Biken strain isolated in the same area have 36 genes out of the 46 nucleotides.
