自深圳建市以来,玩具行业一直是深圳的传统优势产业,为深圳特区的经济建设作出了巨大的贡献。2006年深圳市玩具出口总额达到65亿美元,占全国出口总额177亿的37%,占广东省玩具出口总额140亿美元的46%,至此,深圳已经连续多年蝉联全国玩具出口首位。如今,深圳高新技术产业发展迅猛,已成为全市最重要的支柱产业,2006年,全市高新技术产品产值达6293．68亿元,首次在全国大中城市排名第一,高新技术产品增加值达1808．17亿元,比上年增长29．18％,占全市GDP的31．39％,所占GDP比重居全国第一;具有自主知识产权的高新技术产品产值达3708．24亿元,占全部高新技术产品产值的比重为58．92,也居全国第一。2006年,深圳口岸高新技术产品出口额达696．2亿美元。
