在《红楼梦》中,曹雪芹特别强调,宝钗一家进京的首要目的乃是宝钗待选、参加选秀。但在进京寄居贾府后,此事却无下文,令人费解。我们认为,雪芹这样安排大有深意,他通过薛宝钗放弃选秀这种形式,曲折地表现出自己对孤情寡义的宫廷的藐视与愤恨。迫于压力,作者不能毫无顾忌地宣泄自己的这种情感,所以对宝钗选秀一事既特意在前文提及以引起读者的关注,却又有意在下文不作回应,给读者提供一个想象的空间,借以表达自己的愤懑之情,这是造成薛宝钗选秀之谜的重要原因。
