I. Overview The Asian financial crisis that began in 1997 caused a drastic change in the nominal exchange rates of various countries in the region. This change has greatly changed the original competitive situation in the region and will have a great impact on the size and structure of international trade. Observers attributed the Asian financial crisis to several reasons, including the massive outflow of funds in Northeast Asia since the mid-1980s and the unsoundness of the entire region.
