According to a new study by the Freedonia Group, the demand for industrial grease in the United States is expected to increase at a rate of 2% per year. It will reach 4.4 billion pounds (about 2 million tons) by 2001. According to the company’s assertion, about 30% of the U.S. market demand continues to depend on imports, mainly coconut oil and palm oil. By 2001, the total market for industrial oils will reach US$1.2 billion, including coconut oil and non-food tallow. It will continue to account for the largest market share, accounting for approximately 20%. But both will face competition challenges from palm oil and palm kernel oil. Due to strong market demand for fatty acids (see the attached table), by the year 2001, tall oil will continue to maintain its leading position, accounting for 33% of the total industrial fat demand. Freedonia pointed out that the demand for oils and fats in the plastics and rubber industries is increasing by about 4% each year and will reach 255 million pounds (116,000 tons) by 2001.
