Austin’s novel The Mansfield Manor is still the subject of life in the English village gentry, with the main characters forming a circle of relationships centered on Sir Thomas and Crawford’s siblings. Sir Thomas represents the orthodox conception of rural nobility, and Crawford siblings embody the values of urban beheadeds. In their apparently seemingly friendly relations hide the essential conflicts. This article attempts to start with the analysis of these two interpersonal relationships and their relationship, and explores the author’s contemplation of the formation of a new industrialized society and the interpersonal and moral orientation during the breakup of traditional agricultural society.
