Eastman Kodak has developed a high-definition electronic intermediate system for the film industry that scans the footage on motion picture film to digitize it. The screen operates interactively on the computer workbench, then records back the movie film. Motion picture film scanners, recorders and workstations are collectively referred to as Cineon digital cinema systems. Cinesite can provide this system of service. Since the input and output of such equipment can be digital images and film images on some type of magnetic media, there is a need to establish a file format standard for digital cinema exchange. This article will discuss important image features for the film industry, highlighting the need for an easy-to-read, common file format developed by the SMPTE Digital Picture Working Group. Finally, a brief description of the steps of color correction, and the color pixel performance of the Cineon digital cinema system.
