利川县位于鄂西南山区,绝大部分耕地都分布在海拔1,000米以上的高山上,地势复杂,气候冷湿。据利川县气象站(海拔1,072米,北纬30°20’)1959—1965年的气象记载,年平均温度12.8℃,最高温度35.4℃,最低温度-8.5℃;年降雨量1,209毫米左右;无霜期217—239天;一般始霜期在10月下旬,终霜期在3月底。过去由于土壤瘠薄,肥料缺乏,加上耕作粗放,粮食作物产量极低。解放后,在党的领导下,进行了一系列的农田基本建设和技术改革,
