Australian researchers analyzed cord blood from more than 1,000 children and found that infants with an overly active immune system at birth are more likely to develop food allergy symptoms when they grow up. Investigators from the Institute of Walter and Eliza Hall Institute conducted a survey of infants who showed signs of food allergies within the first 12 months of life and found a specific immune system monocyte in their umbilical cord blood. The researchers also found that children who are more prone to food allergy have very active monocytes in their umbilical cord blood. These active monocytes release a signal that prompts the formation of a new class of immune cells called T cells that are linked to immune and allergy symptoms.
