1998年底建成通车的黄黄高速公路,西起黄石长江大桥,东接安徽省合界高速公路,长110公里;另建有黄梅至小池联络线,与九江长江大桥和江西省昌九高速公路相通,长32公里。其中界子墩至黄梅段为沪蓉国道与京福国道的共用部分,具有一路连三省的特点。黄黄高速公路开通初期的1999年日均车流量为4500辆,到2001年日均车流量为10000辆,2004年日均车流量近14000辆,年均增长率超过10%,特别是大吨位车辆不断增加,超载车辆过多、过大,造成了水泥混凝土路面病害时有发生,实施改建十分必要,也十分迫切。为此,2005年3月,湖北省发展和改革委员会批复黄黄高速公路进行路面改建。
