遵照毛主席关于“有了优良品种,即不增加劳动力、肥料,也可获得较多的收成”的教导,我所于1974、1975年由省林科所分得湿地松种子20斤、火炬松种子5斤,共培育湿地松苗8万株、火炬松苗2万株,于1975年春营造火炬松、湿地松各100亩,其中绝大部分苗木供给本县国营林场及重点社队林场造林。两种松的造林地位于低丘陵区,土壤为红壤,PH值5.5—5.6,干燥瘠薄。根据衡山县气象站1960—1976年气象资料,平均年降雨量1373.1毫米,年日照时数1633.9时,年无霜期287天;年平均温度17.1℃,年最高温度39.9℃(出现在1971年7月21日),绝对最低温度-8.9℃(出现在1972年2月9日)。
