沿着古丝绸之路漫游,进入河西走廊的东部,有一块宝地——永昌。这里盛产镍矿,遐尔闻名,故称镍都。1881年,国务院批准在此设立了金昌市。 30年前,当国家地质队员手中的测绘仪瞄准着龙首山,唤醒沉睡了千万年的有色金属矿藏的同时,一面鲜艳的“八一”军旗已插在了永昌县东北部,腾格里沙漠西部边缘荒原上,(金昌与民勤的交界处),与龙首山遥遥相望。
