教学作为一种认识的活动,是一个多面体的统一体,既有主客体的统一,又有主体间的统一,还有客体不同层面的统一。而在英语教学中有两个主体:教师、学生;有两种活动方式:教、学;有一种共同的对象:英语。表层结构相同而深层结构却相异。学生作为主体,被认识的客体是英语,即英语符号及其功能。当主体是教师时,“英语”作为认识对象并不是英语这个符号本身,是与英语有联系的一种抽象规律——教学规律,而教学规律之重就是提高与增强学生的“自我意识”。
