The burial volume of high grade ore is rapidly decreasing. As a result, the reprocessing of once-abandoned fine tailings and the use of those low-grade ores, which have to be very finely ground to dissociate metal minerals, have drawn increasing attention. The most common dry dressing method is not suitable for fine-grained material. Boiling layers can provide an ideal method of fine-grained minerals that can be charged and sorted by their electrical properties when the fine-grained material is subjected to an electric field. This paper introduces the charging and sorting mechanism of solid particles in boiling state for electrostatic separation, with particular emphasis on the effects of humidity and temperature. The article also talked about the new collection electrodes developed by the University of Western Ontario and the devices used to conduct a basic study of the charging behavior of fine-grained materials in suspension.
