Wang Changshun, former deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China(CAAC), was appointed the general manager of Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) on November 1, taking the place of Kong Dong, who retired because of age. Previously, Wang Changshun was responsible for investment and finance of the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
Kong Dong took the place of Li Jiaxiang as the general manager of AVIC in April 2007. Though he was considered to be a pragmatic and low-profile person, he finished several rounds of expansions for AVIC by acquiring the shareholding right of Shenzhen Airlines and establishing Beijing Airlines and Dalian Airlines. Kong Dong was born in 1948 and is 63 years old now, past the prescriptive retirement age of 60.
Wang Changshun once worked as the vice general manager of Southern Airlines and was then promoted to general manager. In August 2004, he was appointed deputy director of the CAAC. He was said to be a steady and pragmatic man, just like Kong Dong.
Now Kong Dong still retains his position as board chairman of China Airlines. It is reported that Wang Changshun will take over this position in the future.
The shakeup of AVIC is an integral part of the leadership change in the Chinese civil aviation industry. In November, Ma Xulun, general manager of Eastern Airlines, took over as Party chief and vice general manager of Eastern Airlines Group, parent company of Eastern Airlines.
