Every morning, after getting up, you watch the weather forecast, unread messages and the videos you like on the “magic screen” when brushing your teeth. You can keep watching the live football game which you have not finished at home with mobile phone at the subway. You can also finish it on computer when you arrive in your arrive. Security system will call the police automatically if strangers break into your houses and will simultaneously send messages to you. If you feel sick, you can go to doctor without going out…
The smart life supported by information technologies is not far from us. In the 2010 China International Industry Expo on November 9, China Telecom made a show of the aforementioned life styles with the theme “Smart City Launches Dreams in Life”.
The booth for China Telecom looked like a “magic cube”, which divides into four exhibition areas: Metro Optical Network (MONET), Internet of Things, E-surfing 3G and World Expo. China Telecom made use of virtue scenes, distant access and interactive experience to combine the mobile and fixed line, traditional business and new business together, showing the visitors a picture of all-business, all-day and all-directional informationized low-carbon living style. This fully reflected China Telecom’s comprehensive service ability and customer-centered operation pattern which lead to its undifferentiated competition.

New Houses in the Age of Optical Fiber

Walking into the “magic cube”, visitors firstly stepped into the exhibition area for MONET, where they could experience the new communication pattern in the age of optical fiber. The “house” shown there got access to a 100Mb broadband and collects the latest applications of housing based on the technology of optical fiber, including “magic screen”, house security, house Mega Eye, IPTV. 3-screen interaction and smart home.
Among them the 3-screen interaction showed the free transferal and switch of videos among the screens of TV, mobile phone and computer. One day before the opening of the exhibition, China Telecom launched new product “3G Initiative” based on this technology, meeting more customers’ demands and upgrading users’ experience.
“House security” can prevent fire and theft when you are not at home. When nobody is at home, the house security system, if on, can detect any abnormal voices or touches, can call the police automatically and send MMS (three pictures in succession) to the house owner’s mobile phone.
In the area of smart home stood a “smart refrigerator” that can manage the foodstuff inside it with the technology of Internet of Things. It can send relevant SMS to the owners to remind them of doing with the foodstuff.
The future trend of the housing development features the combination of “magic screen” and house control, which turns this household information terminal into a “remote control handset”. You can control light, TV, curtain, projection machine, DVD player and so on through the visible touch buttons on the “magic screen”. You can also play movies and games with this system.
It is known that China Telecom is promoting the overall construction of “MONET”, which aims at connecting optical fiber to the buildings. It will spend three years (2009-2012) providing the access of 100Mb broadband to each house and 1Gb broadband to each building and improving the total broadband outlet to 1Tb. The number of users of MONET will be 3 million in 2011. In 2012, the MONET will cover all households in Shanghai, who will all enjoy the 100Mb broadband network. By then, Shanghai will be a city that has access to the fiber optical network from the five major continents.

  Application of Internet of Things

Leaving the exhibition area of MONET, visitors will be greeted by the exhibition are for Internet of Things, where a series of top information services was displayed.
Internet of Things refers to connecting things and Internet together with a variety of sensors, materializing the communication between men and men, men and things. By now, China Telecom Shanghai has already built an end-to-end system of Internet of Things, including the unified access to the management platform, communication modules for different standard interfaces, terminals, sensors, as well the safe network.
Smart distant meter reading refers to the reading of the data of users’ electrical power consumption via high-speed and safe CDMA network which makes the whole process automatic and instant. According to Liu Yuan, vice engineer-in-chief of China Telecom Shanghai, the new technology has been used in the villas in the Zizhu Garden, Pudong District. Later China Telecom will launch the cooperation with gas and water supplier in Jinshan District in the distant meter reading for gas and water consumption.
Smart logistics adopts the functions of positioning, talkback, photo taking and two-dimension code scanning of E-surfing 3G mobile phones, applying supervision and control over the whole process of dispatching, transportation and delivery of goods. The smart cold-chain transportation supervision system adopts temperature sensors, RFID, E-surfing mobile network to make an overall supervision and control over the production, storage, transportation and usage of food and drugs sensitive to temperature.
Smart transportation is based on the onboard application of Internet of Things developed by China Telecom. It provides the services of positioning vehicles, navigation, location info delivery, emergency call, stolen vehicle tracking, distant maintenance and control. Now the new technology is applied in 186 buses in Shanghai.
Smart healthcare is the most promising application of Internet of Things. In the exhibition area, a visitor measures his blood pressure, heartbeat through portable blood-pressure meter and electrocardiograph. The data was sent to a mobile phone via Bluetooth and then was sent to the backstage service system of the Renji Hospital by China Telecom’s 3G network. The visitor also had a “face-to-face” talk with the doctor through video phone. The doctor told him: “Your heartbeat is normal but your blood pressure is a bit high. You need to pay attention to your diet, quit smoking and alcohol and increase physical training.
Liu Yuan said that the Shanghai Municipal Health Department planned to invest 1.5 million yuan in building Shenkang Hospital Connection Project, which aims at building a data platform for 23 tertiary hospitals in Shanghai. Meanwhile, Renji Hospital has established long-distance medical station in 104 community hospitals with the help of smart healthcare system. It plans to spread the application to 2,900 community hospitals in the future.
In addition, smart positioning, smart campus, smart security guard and smart passenger volume analysis were also exhibited there and some of them have become true.

Build a Leading Enterprise in Internet of Things

The Internet of Things has been listed into the 12th Five-Year Plan. It is forecasted that the Internet of Things will see fast development between 2011 and 2015. As an important operator of Internet of Things, China Telecom set up clear positioning and grand plans for itself.
Liu Yuan from China Telecom Shanghai said that China Telecom would commit itself to becoming an enterprise of Internet of Things with independent innovation ability and leading business pattern. By the end of the 12th Five-Year Period, China Telecom will have 1 million users of Internet of Things. Its total income exceeds 500 million yuan. The related chain is valued at 2 billion yuan.
Liu Yuan thought that China Telecom had the biggest fixed communication network. It is the largest Internet operating company in the world, as well as the only operator having the communication ability via satellites. With such a large network and clients reservation, China Telecom can know every aspect of the informationization and provides ubiquitous network and service for the development of Internet of Things.
Compared with other operators, China Telecom began to transform from traditional telecom service supplier to comprehensive information service supplier in 2004. It has accumulated rich experience in the application of Internet of Things, as well as obvious advantages in technologies, management and human resources.
These are of great importance for displaying a “ubiquitous China Telecom providing seamless broadband network, unparalleled information contents and meticulous services”.
