冬小麦在河西零星种植虽有百多年历史,但大面积种植仅开始于一九五三年。五六年种植三千九百八十亩,七五年收获面积为六十六万八千三百亩,其中张掖地区四十一万三千四百亩,占麦田总面积的34.6%,酒泉地区十二万零七百亩,占麦田总面积的13.68%,武威地区十三万四千二百亩,占麦田总面积的6%。高台、临泽、张掖三县,近年由川区逐渐向海拔较高的沿山地区发展。冬小麦在河西已经逐渐成为主要的粮食作物。
