在钻井过程中要穿遇各种岩石,对不稳定性最敏感的岩石是页岩,页岩的主要成份是粘土,粘土又可概括地分为膨胀性粘土和非膨胀性粘土。膨胀性粘土的典型是蒙脱土,非膨胀性粘土的代表是尹利石。前者遇水易发生膨胀、分散引起地层大量造浆,后者在氢氧根存在下会促使其沿节理剥落进而导致井壁不稳定。采用某些化学品抑制泥浆中的水进入页岩是解决页岩水化问题的基本措施之一。此种井壁稳定剂即是一种有效地能够稳定井壁的泥浆处理
