The article estimates the TFP growth of major cities in the Pearl River Delta from 1988 to 2009 using an excess logarithmic production function and further decomposes TFP into technological progress, production efficiency and economies of scale based on a stochastic frontier model . The results show that: firstly, the accumulation of factors of production has a moderate effect on urban economic growth in the Greater Pearl River Delta region, while the growth of total factor productivity accounts for about 50% of the average in most cities; secondly, urbanization Rate, the proportion of tertiary industry in each city’s GDP, infrastructure level, human resource level and economic dependence on foreign countries have a positive impact on the urban production efficiency, while the city size has a negative correlation with the urban production efficiency. Thirdly, The growth rate of total factor productivity is mainly determined by the rate of change of production efficiency, followed by the rate of technological progress, while in most cities, the scale is not economical.
