The 43-year-old director Zhang Yankui of the Korea National Cancer Center’s Oncogene Research Group announced yesterday that the five-member team led by him has found that chromosome stability is directly related to a coenzyme-related modification, or a substance called sumo. In an interview with a reporter from the “Korea Times”, Zhang said: “People are known to have cancer when they are in an unstable state. Our findings confirm that the loss of the sumo gene leads to chromosomal instability, which means that the sumo gene inhibits cancer. “In the past, people thought that radiation, chemical substances, and reactive oxygen species were the only sources of cancer.”
