Attracting some of the star scholars to return to China is not enough to turn China into an academic power. Sending students to study abroad was once an important measure for improving education in China. In the early 1990s, Shi Yigong, Dean of the School of Life Sciences at Tsinghua University, went to study in the United States and eventually became a professor at Princeton University. In 2008, when he returned to the motherland at the age of 40, he became the leader of returned Chinese scholars.
