我第一件清晰记得的事是跟母亲一道跑。我们周围所有的人也都在跑。那是在1927年,我九岁,我们正朝着阿肯色城郊外那道高耸的河堤狂奔。密西西比河上游的另一道大堤溃决了,河水横冲直撞,我们在逃命。
The first thing I clearly remember was to run with my mother. All the people around us are running. It was 1927, and I was nine years old and we were running towards the soaring embankment of Arkansas. Another embankment on the upper Mississippi River was broken up and the river was running rampant. We were fleeing.
