Since August 1958, I have been transferred from the Renmin University of China to the Political Research Laboratory of the CPC Central Committee. By March 4, 1968, Chen Boda put me in jail. For ten years, I had been a pawn under the command of Chen Boda . However, before the “Cultural Revolution”, I seldom met the great leader, let alone have direct contact with him, so I have always regarded him as an unmanageable big man. His positions at that time included: an alternate member of the Political Bureau of the Central Political Bureau; a director of the Central Political Research Office; and a chief editor of the Hongqi Magazine. After 1964, he was the dean of the Central Institute of Marxism-Leninism and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and deputy director of the Central Propaganda Department. In my mind, he is the central ideological expert, theorist, number one pen, known as the “old lady.” From the late 1950s to the early 1960s, I have seen him a few faces. From the appearance, he is not outstanding, depth of myopia, do not speak, no trimming, no justification, people seem easy-going. This is my impression of the year.
