Regularly purging the top of the furnace in order to maintain a good cooling state is to extend the life of magnesia brick roof effective measures. Since August 1976, our factory installed compressed air purging devices on the tops of two 85-ton open hearth furnaces. At first, we chose to test in the front part of the top of the open hearth furnace which has more fouling in the production process, poor working conditions on the top of the hearth and difficult to purge by hand. The purge range is about half the area of the top of the main furnace and the top of the main furnace, accounting for 30% of the total area of the top of the furnace, as shown in Figure 1. The first stage (from August 1976 to September 1977) shows that this purging device has the advantages of simple structure, convenient operation and safety
